Tips for Choosing the Perfect Cute Name

While obviously different types of animals can inspire different name ideas, some concepts stay the same across the board. It doesn’t matter if you’re naming a mammal, bird, reptile, arthropod, or something else entirely: these universally useful pet naming tips will always set you on the right path.
- Match The Name To Your Pet: Your name should ideally fit your pet both in appearance and in personality. Obviously, “matching” your pet’s name to their traits can be somewhat abstract if you’re not picking a name that’s just an adjective, but still take the time to “feel out” their name. You’ll be able to sense it if it’s not the right fit.
- Use It Out Loud First: Part of feeling out a potential name is using it out loud a few times first. Your pet’s name might look great on paper, and it might even seem like a good fit for them overall, but if it’s too hard to easily pronounce, or just doesn’t sound “right” when you say it out loud? You might want to head back to the drawing board.
- Consider Pronounceability: Some people want a lengthy, dramatic pet name, and that’s alright. However, if you plan on using vocal commands with your pet, you may want to consider a name that’s fairly short and simple to pronounce (especially one with sharp consonants if you want to have an easier time grabbing their attention). That’s part of the reason why giving your pet’s name a verbal “test drive” first is important!
- Make It Precious: Give your pet a name you have a strong and affectionate personal connection to, such as by naming them after:
Friends or family membersYour cultural or ethnic heritage
Favorite characters from your favorite books/TV/movies/media
Historical figures or people who’ve inspired you
