Naming Tips for Your Moo Crew

Coming up with tons of names for a whole bovine herd can seem like a pretty tall order, but don’t have a cow. While we offered just a handful of possible names here, we’ve got a few extra naming tips to help settle on the best names for your “moo crew” as you explore all the different possibilities out there.
- Fit the Name to Their Traits (Particularly Appearance): This is especially helpful when you’re trying to remember the names of multiple cows in a herd. For example, if you can remember that the black-and-white heifer is named “Oreo,” or that the cow with a heart-shaped spot over one eye is named “Valentine,” you’ll have a much easier time picking them out of a crowd.
- Keep It Brief: If you want to have an easy time calling your cow over from across the pasture, stick with short and simple names, ideally no more than three syllables. Obviously, there’s no real rule about how long or short your cows’ names should be, but short names tend to work better for callouts and commands.
- Consider Pairing ’em Up: Cows are highly social animals, and even if you don’t have a full herd, chances are you have a few cows that stick together as close buddies. Themed names for pairs (eg. “Peanut Butter and Jelly,” “Thelma and Louise,” etc.) or trios ( like “Snap, Crackle, and Pop” or “Huey, Dewey, and Louie”) are always fun and easy to remember!
