There is nothing like a newborn baby to boost your serotonin levels and give you a magic Zen feeling! The funny thing about babies is that it doesn’t matter what species they are—we love them no matter what! Even when the “baby” is of the extra-large mammal variety!
Recently, the Opel Zoo in the German state of Hesse, announced the birth of a new baby African elephant. This little pachyderm is extra special because it has been nearly 60 years since an elephant was born there.
@abcnews After nearly 57 years, the German state of Hesse welcomed an elephant baby at the Opel Zoo. Baby Kaja could be seen exploring her enclosure and having fun with her parents. According to the zoo director, it took over half a decade for the animals to breed because keeping elephant bulls is quite difficult. #abcnews #animals #elephant #germany #opelzoo
Sweet baby Kaja can be seen, along with her parents, exploring her new enclosure. This little one is just over 2 weeks old and it’s clear she is fresh and new and is starting to learn the ropes. With her adorable, tiny trunk, she is taking in all the new scenery and the new smells, however she is sticking close to her mom and dad.
Zoo officials are thrilled to welcome Kaja and the renewed energy that having an elephant calf brings. The baby elephant’s arrival is the direct result of ongoing conservation efforts, and she has quickly captured the hearts of both staff and visitors!

Here are a few fun facts about Kaja and her momma, Kariba:
Kaja was about 220 pounds at birth and stands 35 inches tall.
Kariba is a 19-year-old African savanna elephant that joined the herd at the Opel Zoo in 2020.
Little Kaja was born on May 27, 2025, following a 22-month pregnancy—yes, you read that right; Elephant mommas are pregnant for almost two years before their little bundle of joy joins the world!
Honestly, that sounds exhausting, but we thoroughly appreciate Kariba’s efforts—we just adore her little baby girl!
Thankfully, Kaja is healthy, thriving, and melting the hearts of everyone she meets! We look forward to seeing updates about her soon.
