I love McDonald’s french fries. They’re cheap, easy to eat, and consistently pretty delicious. Plus, there’s a McDonald’s everywhere.
So, seeing ‘Chupie’, a rare Lyoki cat (also known as a “werewolf cat”) devour a French fry with absolute, unbridled, vaguely violent enthusiasm was just like looking in a mirror!
It’s me. Chupie is all of us. Take a look and see if you can spot the resemblances in yourself:

The excited vocalizations! Check. The aggressive grabbing? Check. The shoving them into your mouth so fast you barely avoid activating your gag reflex? Check.
The video got me thinking, though. Is the rare Lyoki cat breed hungrier than normal cats, or is this guy just reaaaallllly into French fries?
The Lyoki’s name is derived from the Greek word for wolf: “lykos,” which is why they are referred to as the “werewolf cat.” This is a very new breed, established in 2010 in Virginia when a woman was gifted two kittens, which due to their sparse coat and abnormal coloration, she originally assumed were a mutation of the Sphynx cat.

After much medical and DNA testing, it was determined that the cats had a recessive gene, unrelated to any other hairless mutations. Around that time, a second pair of these cats appeared. Eventually, two of the found cats from each litter were intentionally mated, and the breed was established in 2011. Cat Fancier’s Association advanced it to “championship status” in 2023.
Due to their sparse coat, breeds such as the Sphynx and the Lyoki tend to have a faster metabolism and need a “higher calorie intake to stay warm without fur.” Seeing a strong appetite is not uncommon, and might account for *some* of Chupie’s enthusiasm regarding French fries.

So, the next time you find yourself in your car, inhaling fries like a feral little goblin, just remember: you’re not alone. Somewhere out there, Chupie is probably doing the exact same thing. And honestly? He gets it. He gets YOU.
