Sometimes we do not even have to wonder what is going on inside our pet’s head—they will tell us themselves! If they need to go out, they’ll stand by the door, and if they want to eat, they’ll situate themselves right by the food bowl until their human takes notice.

Norman the Basset Hound has found the perfect way to get a belly rub anytime he wants one! He acts like he doesn’t want to do anything, and he plops down and just does not budge. He has fooled his mom into thinking he is just exhausted, when in reality, he knows he is perfectly capable of walking the distance to the door—but his efforts are going to cost her!
Recently, he decided it was time for a tummy tickle, and instead of waiting until he was back inside, he figured the driveway was just as good as any other spot. Mom says, “Norman, we have to go inside. We’re almost to the door.” She then turns the camera to indicate just how close they are to the front door before focusing back on her four-legged friend, Norman.
She continues and says, “C’mon! Let’s go!” She then reaches down to grab his collar and persuade him to rise up on his little legs and keep going. However, Norman has another idea! He thinks it’s truly the best time to get that tummy rub, so instead of rising up—he rolls over!

There he is, in the driveway with his short, squatty legs up in the air, just waiting for her to bend down and oblige his request! His mom seems exasperated by his antics, and unfortunately, the video ends before we can see if his ploy was rewarded. But something tells me this stubborn Basset Hound can be very convincing!
Hilariously, in the comment section, many other Basset Hound parents shared pictures of their pets doing exactly the same thing as Norman! There is even a name for this particular behavior—it’s called “Flat Basset Syndrome!”
One fan said, “I love it when you give them the tug, and they roll on their back and go completely limp! LOL.”
Another said, “Mine does the same thing, but as soon as I shake the treat bag, he turns into Jeff Gordon! LOL!”
Several viewers gave advice on how to get him motivated, including: “Crinkle a bag of anything and say ‘yum’ while you’re standing by the door—he’ll jump right up!”
We think Norman is a genius who has trained his humans perfectly! He gets belly rubs and snacks whenever he wants—he just has to put on a show first!
