Not all animals have long-term memory, but it’s clear that this chimpanzee named Citron does. Citron was a rescued chimp that was rehabilitated and released back to the wild. But even years after he was freed, he immediately remembers his caretaker, Fiston, from all those years ago.
The video starts with the chimp entering a river. The chimp doesn’t appear to pay attention to the human at first, but the second the man catches his eye, he immediately knows how he is. A huge smile comes across his face, and he rushes towards him for a hug. It’s a beautiful moment and a joy to witness!
@wildlife_rescuers An embrace that defies time… Citron instantly recognizes Fiston—the caregiver who once nurtured, guided, and respected him. Rescued by our association years ago, this remarkable chimpanzee was eventually released into freedom on Pongo Island. In that moment of reunion, you can feel it all: the memories, the trust, the emotion—pouring out in a single hug. It’s impossible to watch without being deeply moved. We share 98% of our DNA with chimpanzees, yet these incredible beings are still exploited—used in circuses, tested in labs, or kept as pets. They deserve better. They deserve freedom. What a sweet reunion! They go on to say, “In that moment of reunion, you can feel it all: the memories, the trust, the emotion—pouring out in a single hug. It’s impossible to watch without being deeply moved.” We couldn’t agree more!

Do Chimps Have Good Memories?
There are many animals that have the ability to remember forever, like elephants, dogs, and yes, chimps.
Animals Around the Globe explained in a recent article, “Some creatures possess the amazing ability to remember humans for life—even after long periods apart. This remarkable capability not only showcases the deep emotional bonds that can form between humans and animals but also underscores the complex cognitive processes some animals are capable of.” The article goes on to describe 14 animals that can remember forever, including chimpanzees.
“Chimpanzees, sharing a significant percentage of their DNA with humans, demonstrate impressive memory capabilities. These primates can remember human faces and personalities, utilizing their social smarts to maintain connections and navigate social hierarchies. Their ability to foster bonds is indicative of their sophisticated cognitive and emotional processes.”
What a beautiful friendship these two have! Citron is very lucky to have Fiston, and vice versa.
