As someone who grew up watching fast-paced sports like hockey, I never developed the patience for golf. Still, even I would tune in to a golf tournament if special guests like this black bear mom and cubs crashed the course.
On July 2, a golfer caught the sweetest video of a mama bear and her four cubs playing without a care in the world at Grove Park Inn’s Golf Course in Asheville, North Carolina. The unbothered bears wrestled and rolled around like they owned the joint, though, as anyone would have said at the time, they basically did!
The priceless video has gained traction among locals, golf enthusiasts, and animal lovers alike after news outlet WLOS ABC 13 shared it online. It’s impossible not to smile while watching this happy bear family on their day out!
This is too cute! It never gets old watching bears playing together, but my heart nearly burst when Mama Bear rolled around with her little ones. I hope she’s having fun, too, because she deserves it!
Although black bears can have litters that range from one to six cubs, it’s most common to see bear moms with just two or three. Many factors may contribute to the number of bear cubs per litter, including the availability of food, so this big family could be a sign that food is plentiful for bears in North Carolina.
As one Asheville resident explained, this adorable family is well-known in the area. She wrote, “That family (4 bear cubs is rare, so this bear family is easy to recognize) was in my next door neighbor’s yard yesterday morning! All four babies were at the very top of a tree playing together, and Mama was scratching her back and lying at the base of the tree.”
How cool! It’s such a gift to witness these incredible creatures in their natural habitats, even if we have built over much of their home with houses, stores, and golf courses.
“Please protect this cute bear family!” commenters echoed. It’s common for wildlife officials to become concerned when the same bear or family is repeatedly spotted in highly populated areas, but as this video proves, this mama bear and her cubs aren’t bothering anyone.
Technically, much of North Carolina is their home, too, so they have just as much of a right to use the golf course as the rest of their neighbors!
