Anyone who’s fostered, rescued, or even babysat a dog knows that it takes time for a pup to feel comfortable in a new environment. Pet experts even recommend that adopters follow the 3-3-3 rule when bringing home a new dog to keep expectations realistic. According to this rule, it can take weeks, even months, before a rescue dog feels completely at home!
No one knows this better than the staff and volunteers at Whispering Willows Senior Dogs. This senior dog sanctuary is home to dozens of elderly pups in varying levels of hospice care who are living their very best lives. They have outdoor space to roam and play, lots of human and canine friends to bond with, and all the sunny napping spots they could possibly desire.
On June 3, Whispering Willows showed exactly what the transition is like for the senior dogs who call this sanctuary home. In the video, you’ll see the heartwarming difference between a nervous new friend and a furry retiree living it up in their forever home!
@whisperingwillowsdogs When our seniors arrive here to their new forever home they are usually nervous, maybe a little scared and overall anxious about this new transition. But as soon as they meet their senior family and are shown all the love and care we provide here, they open up and accept the love they deserve ❤️🐶🥹 #rescue #dogsoftiktok #seniordog #fyp #rescuedog #seniordogsoftiktok #dogrescue #wwsds #dogtok #seniordogrescue#adoptdontshop
Pass the tissues, please! It’s so heartwarming to watch any dog opening up in their new home, but knowing these spry seniors are going to be loved for the rest of their days is the icing on the cake. If only they could know from the get-go just how wonderful their new forever home is going to be!
Commenters like Kat felt moved thinking about “Many of them finally being able to relax and feel safe and happy for the first time in their little lives.” Even just witnessing their new beginnings could put a smile on anyone’s face. Although many of these old dogs came to the sanctuary after losing their also elderly owners, others have needed a refuge like this their whole lives.

Every new resident receives lots of love and encouragement, but it made me misty-eyed to see the gentle Pit Bull welcoming their new Dachshund pal to the best new home for old dogs. It’s like they’re saying, ‘Welcome home!’
