On a hot summer day, there’s nothing more refreshing than a dip in the crisp, cool water of a swimming pool. Whether you jump cannonball style into the deep end or slowly ease into the shallow end, you can feel your worries melt away as relaxation takes over. Many animals love to swim too!
Bears can frequently be caught doing things that humans do – and as one homeowner recently found out, that includes taking a swim in the pool to cool off! A mama bear and her cub were spotted in the backyard swimming pool of the Paige family in Monrovia, CA, and according to the family, this bear duo are regulars in the neighborhood.
Basking in the sunshine, the mama brown bear takes a few leisurely laps around the pool. Meanwhile her little cub seems content to just sit on the edge and splash around a little. Just like a human mother would, the mother bear attempts to coax her little cub into the water, but he seems reluctant to take the plunge.
At one point, the little fluff-ball turns away from his mom and wonders a few feet away. Honestly, it was quite human-like, as if he were saying, “I’m not getting in, and you can’t make me!”
Once they were done having a little cool-down, the mom and her baby decided to take a snooze in a nearby avocado tree – after eating a snack, of course!

It seems that this might be a regular occurrence for this family and their neighbors. Apparently, the members of the community don’t regularly call authorities to report the animals either. They feel they can share the space with them and enjoy seeing the bears and other wildlife in their backyard.
One viewer commented, “The residents of Monrovia have an unwritten rule about bears. They do not call any authorities to have the bear removed. They leave the bears alone and share the neighborhood with them.”
Another stated, “I know one isn’t supposed to feed them, but I would SO want to bring them a giant fruit platter. Maybe another of crudités. LOL.”
It’s nice to hear that the residents of Monrovia, CA have embraced the bear population in their area and it sounds like this mama bear and her cub get the celebrity treatment when they come to town!
