A Southern California neighborhood in Monrovia has been experiencing a series of home break ins, but the only thing being taken is food. The suspect is a large black bear that has a collar on his neck, meaning he’s been caught breaking and entering before.
CBS News shared video clips of the bear on the hunt. Neighbors have woken up to find their kitchens raided and food chaotically and messily strewn about; apparently, the bear has no manners. In one specific home, the bear encountered a woman’s dog, whom he curiously sniffed and checked out before moving on. He also helped himself to taking a dip in another family’s pool. The intruder is making himself right at home!

The CBS News anchor described the bear’s actions as a ‘Reverse Goldilocks situation,’ which cracked viewers up. Many left comments saying that they were glad that nobody and no pets had been hurt. Others commented on the bear’s size and also noticed that the bear was wearing a tracking device.

More About the Bear Thief in Monrovia, California
NBC News in Los Angeles shared more details about what the hungry bear has been up to. The bear has been spotted both at night and in broad daylight. Lilly Martinez, a resident in the neighborhood where the bear has been seen, shared, “We’ve seen this bear come by a couple of times. It not only went into our neighbor’s house right next door, but into the neighbor’s house two doors down; into their kitchen, eating ice cream and pizza, and apparently getting into the pool.”
Neighbors have tried to make the bear’s visits uncomfortable for him, using loud noises to get the bear to move on. CBS News reported in another article that residents have tried banging pots and pans to no effect. The only thing that has worked in getting the unwelcome guest to leave is ammonia-soaked rags.
NBC also shared some safety precautions for residents. “Wildlife officials are reminding the pubic that now is the time of the year when California black bears forage for food, often going where it’s readily available. They advise people who live in the foothills to lock their doors, use bear-proof garbage containers, and to keep their distance from wildlife if they see them.”
