Goliath, who is the oldest resident at his South Florida zoo, recently celebrated two major milestones. The first was his 135th birthday. And the second was his first-ever Father’s Day celebration!
That’s right, this 517-pound tortoise just became a father for the first time on his 135th birthday! Now, that is a very special day to be sure.
Yes, it did take this massive Galápagos tortoise a very long time to finally enter fatherhood, but hey, better late than never!
But as this news report notes, Goliath’s partner, Sweet Pea, isn’t exactly a spring chicken herself. She entered motherhood for the first time at the ripe old age of 100!
According to the report, the zoo, which is located near the Miami area, has submitted an application to the Guinness Book of World Records. And why not? We don’t think there are too many guys becoming fathers for the first time in their lives when they turn 135, LOL.
At What Age Do Galápagos Tortoises Typically Give Birth?
Galápagos tortoises will typically reach sexual maturity between the ages of 20 to 25. So, Goliath and Sweet Pea missed that marked by quite a bit.
With that being said, though, it is important to remember that when tortoises are involved, slow and steady wins the race. After all, what’s the rush when you live for as long as these creatures do?
Besides, Galápagos tortoises don’t stop growing until after they hit 40. So, their adulthood lasts for a very long time, to say the least.

As the news report jokingly stated, maybe Goliath and Sweet Pea were just late bloomers? You know, maybe they were worried about the economy, or they didn’t have their careers in order yet, or couldn’t afford a down payment on a decent house, LOL.
Whatever their reasons may be for taking so long to finally become parents, all we have to say to Goliath and Sweet Pea is congratulations!
We just know that these amazing creatures are going to make fantastic parents, and we are also sure that their hatchlings will become excellent members of the zoo community they have been born into.
