As pack animals, dogs are some of the most social creatures on Earth. Anyone who’s ever adopted a dog knows just how attached they can become to their humans, but canine experts have found that some dog breeds are more affectionate and gentle-spirited than others.
The Golden Retriever is the perfect example. Even though dogs from any breed can be loving, Goldens are famous for their affectionate and overly friendly personalities. Whether they’re giving gentle kisses to their newborn human sibling or becoming instant BFFs with wild animals, you can count on a Golden to be as sweet as sugar.
On June 4, dog mom Caroline couldn’t believe her eyes when her Golden Retriever, Banks, found a baby deer resting in the grass. What happened next couldn’t have been any more wholesome and heartwarming!
That little baby deer is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen! It would have been heartwarming to watch Banks befriending a turtle, like Caroline initially thought, but this was even sweeter. The fawn even warmed up to their new pal as if this was totally normal!

“Dog is lucky mama didn’t come over,” one commenter pointed out, “but maybe she could tell they’re harmless.” It seems like the mama deer was nearby, or at least not gone for long, and she would have come racing back if she sensed her baby in distress. Apparently, Banks passed her test!
Interacting With Fawns Safely
Even so, Caroline made sure to observe the entire interaction. The baby fawn trotted back to their mama after a moment, and everyone was left with the safe and joyful memory of this interaction.
That’s the right way to do it! It’s important not to interact with fawns too much when Mom drops them off somewhere safe. The mama deer almost always returns, though it could confuse her if her baby moved to a different spot or is covered by the scent of humans.
Banks and Caroline’s adorable deer sighting couldn’t have gone better, and the Golden Retriever’s gentle personality is one major reason why!
