Not everyone has the education, ability, or emotional availability to become a full-time animal rescuer (and that’s ok!), but many people step up for rescue dogs and cats when they need them the most. One of those people is an Oklahoma resident and outdoor enthusiast called @nicksalchemy, who recently cut a lake trip short for the sweetest reason.
In late June, Nick took a drive to Lake Louis Burtschi in Grady County, Oklahoma, where he quickly ran into the most bittersweet sight. Another truck was leaving the lake as Nick arrived, with an abandoned puppy attempting to chase after it. Instead of continuing on with his day, the selfless outdoorsman dropped everything to bring the grateful puppy to safety.
@nicksalchemy Last Thursday I went fishing and came across a puppy that was dumped at Lake Louis Burtschi. When I pulled in, a truck was leaving and a puppy was coming my direction, chasing the other truck. Who knows if those people are who dumped the pup. I turned around for a sec trying to get the truck’s attention and they sped off. Then I go back toward the puppy and it had walked out on the dock. I then got out of my truck and that’s where the video picks up. I took her to a vet/family friend, who was 10 min away. No microchip. They gave a rabies vax and checked her stool. Had a parasite so they gave meds to treat with along with flea/tick meds. I saw some ticks on her and took her to a groomer for flea/tick bath. They plucked 40-50 ticks. Poor thing. When my late dog Bud passed, I kept his stuff – dog bowls, seat cover, etc, so I went by my Mom’s house to get all of that along with a spare crate my Mom had. We eventually got home and we settled in. She ate. She got in the crate and slept all night without crying. Vet thinks she’s 5-8 months old and doubts she will grow much more. 21 lbs. Has all her adult teeth. I reached out to some rescues but haven’t heard back yet. I’ll care for her and love on her until she has a good home. I wish I could keep her for good but my current life situation doesn’t allow it. 🙁 Considering what month it is and that I found her at Lake Louis Burtschi, I named her June Lou for the time being. Feel free to share with anyone who may be interested in the sweetest soul. Located in Central Oklahoma. #rescuedog #rescue #savethepuppies
How could anyone leave this sweet dog behind? She seems so friendly and well-behaved, and there’s zero doubt in my mind that she’s grateful for the rescue. Whoever had her first is missing out on the most incredible dog!
“This puppy is beyond adorable,” one commenter agreed. “I can’t believe some soulless person did this, but you are a wonderful person. Keep us updated on your lives together.”
Not only did Nick invite the happy puppy into his truck, home, and heart, but he also went above and beyond to make sure that she was healthy and comfortable. He brought her to a veterinarian friend, who administered the proper vaccines and parasite medication, and then he visited his mom’s house to pick up all the necessary dog supplies.
The final touch was to give her a name: June Lou, after the place and month she was found.
@nicksalchemy Some folks want to see more of the lady. Here ya go. She’s a good’n. #rescuedog
Nick’s new fans are falling head over heels for this long-bodied, low-rider dog, and many of them are even cheering for Nick to adopt her permanently. As wonderful as that would be, he’s announced that he’s just going to be the dog’s foster dad.
That’s a bittersweet revelation, but kudos to Nick for understanding the significant responsibility that comes with being a pet parent. Perhaps he’ll change his mind, or maybe June will be adopted by one of his friends, but whatever happens next, he’s already done so much for this adorable, grateful puppy!
