Cool Facts About Highland Cows
Right about now, you might be wondering where you could put a mini Highland cow…we certainly are! They’re so adorable and cuddly, and we’d love to have one…or three! Highland cows are known for their gorgeous hair, but it does more than help them look cute and fluffy. Their signature bangs are called “dossan” and provide the cow with insulation, which is vital during the frigid cold winters of the Scottish Highlands, where they were originally bred.
Highland cows’ horns can grow up to 3-4 feet across in length and have a unique pattern different for every cow, much like human fingerprints. They use their horns to dig through snow and grass in search of food.
Did you know that both male and female cows grow horns? Highland Titles explains how to tell the difference, “A bull’s horns often grow forwards or even slightly downwards and have a much wider base, whereas a cow’s face upwards and are longer and finer at the tip than a bull’s horns.” It’s a simple way to remember the differences between the two!
