Do English Bulldogs Like to Swim?
English bulldogs can swim, but they always need to wear a life jacket so they don’t sink. The Smart Canine explains, “Most Bulldogs can swim, but not very well. Features of their facial structure, such as a short nasal passage, require Bulldogs to tilt their heads up while in water. As a result, swimming is much more difficult for Bulldogs compared to other breeds. That’s not to say it’s impossible for them to swim. Bulldogs just require more training and patience to learn.”
The same article ‘strongly recommends’ that these dogs wear a life jacket anytime they’re in the pool. Because they have to tilt their heads up to breathe and because of their short, stubby legs making paddling difficult, English Bulldogs can drown more easily than other breeds. “Not only will a life jacket give your Bulldog more confidence, but it can give you better peace of mind knowing your Bulldog won’t sink if you look away for a split second. It’s helpful even if you plan to stay near the dog at all times.”
No matter the dog breed, anytime they swim, make sure they have access to clean drinking water so they don’t drink the pool (or lake, river, ocean) water and never leave them unattended since accidents can happen.
