Penguins can be some pretty funny creatures. From the adorable way that they waddle around to the idiosyncratic personality traits they exhibit, watching these birds go is always a good time.
So, it’s no surprise that this very up-close and personal footage, which a wildlife biologist recently took of an emperor penguin colony reacting to a camera, is so much fun to watch.
Comically, when seen through the field of view of this wide-angle camera lens, these curious Emperor Penguins look like giant monsters. Their long beaks snapping away at the lens like creatures out of a Godzilla movie.
Of course, these gorgeous birds are not monsters at all. They are just wondering what that strange-looking object is in their habitat. And we can’t really blame them for being curious.

After all, if we didn’t know what a camera was, and saw one looking at us, we might have a similar reaction too, that is, if we had long beaks, LOL.
Fun Facts About Emperor Penguins
As big as these Emperor Penguins might look in that footage, in real life, they only stand around 45 inches tall. Still, at that height, which is just under 4 feet tall, they are still the largest living Penguins in the world.
However, the long-extinct colossus penguin, which roamed Antarctica some 40 million years ago, was around 8 feet tall, according to fossils that scientists have found. Now, wouldn’t that be a sight to see!
Considering that Emperor Penguins live in colonies that can consist of up to 5,000 or more Penguins, we can only imagine what it would be like to see 5,000 8-foot-tall colossus Penguins roaming around.
Because of their immense size, those Penguins probably would have looked like actual monsters without wide-angle lens photography exaggerating their size.
