This beautiful albino deer is incredibly rare—its odds of being born are estimated at just 1 in 20,000 to 30,000, though some studies put the number as high as 1 in 100,000.

Despite their stunning beauty, many hunters (and people in general) believe that the recessive gene present in a white deer makes it “defective”, and so will hunt it freely.
In addition to their value to trophy hunters, white deer face many challenges that typical deer do not including:
- Sun Sensitivity (due to their lack of melanin)
- Vision Issues*
- Hearing Problems*
- Lack of Camouflage (increased predation)
- Skeletal Deformities
Not all albino deer exhibit hearing and vision issues, but it’s enough that, when combined with all of the other obstacles they face, that they have a marked vulnerability in natural environments.
In many cultures, white deer are seen as magical and sacred—symbols of good luck, hope, or wisdom. In Native American cultures, they were considered messengers of the gods or even divine beings. In Celtic mythology, they were believed to be a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds.
