TCR World Tour: Ehrlacher extends championship lead in Vila Real

Yann Ehrlacher emerged with the most points from round four of the Kumho FIA TCR World Tour at Vila Real, as the Frenchman took pole and victory in Race 1 before a top-eight finish in the reverse-grid second race

Yann Ehrlacher underlined his title credentials by claiming his first pole position of the season and converting it into a commanding lights-to-flag win in Race 1. His performance across the weekend, which also included topping all practice sessions, strengthened his grip on the championship as the season reached its halfway point.

The Lynk & Co Cyan Racing driver headed a one-two in qualifying with teammate Santiago Urrutia just 0.180s adrift, while Esteban Guerrieri placed third in the GOAT Racing Honda in a session interrupted by three red flags.

In the opening race, Ehrlacher led away cleanly and was never challenged, with Urrutia and Guerrieri following him home to claim the podium places. Aurélien Comte jumped past Mikel Azcona at the start to claim fourth, while the latter’s afternoon unravelled with a puncture that dropped him to 11th.

There was misfortune for several drivers. Viktor Andersson suffered a fuel pump issue before the start, and both Marco Butti and Dušan Borković retired with mechanical problems, with the Serb’s car sustaining damage in contact with the barriers. Ignacio Montenegro, despite a pit-lane start and a drive-through penalty, recovered to ninth with a late pass on local wildcard Daniel Teixeira.

Ehrlacher’s Race 1 victory stretched his points lead to 31, though he faced a tougher challenge in Race 2 from tenth on the reversed grid.

In the second race, it was Thed Björk and Ma Qing Hua who continued Lynk & Co Cyan Racing’s stranglehold on the weekend. Ma allowed Björk to get by mid-race, with the Swede taking a controlled victory, his first of the season. Montenegro completed the podium to score his maiden World Tour top three finish.

Montenegro had started on pole but was quickly demoted by the Cyan cars. Behind, Comte again impressed to finish fourth, while Azcona salvaged fifth following teammate Norbert Michelisz’s late-race drama.

Guerrieri finished sixth ahead of Borković, while Ehrlacher came home eighth to limit his points loss. The Frenchman maintained a comfortable 27-point cushion over Guerrieri heading into the summer break, with Urrutia third in the standings on 215 points.

The series resumes in September at Australia’s the Bend Motorsport Park for round five of the eight-event campaign.

Kumho FIA TCR World Tour standings:

  1. Ehrlacher, 250pts
  2. Guerrieri, 223
  3. Urrutia, 215
