Is it really any surprise that the Internet just couldn’t get enough of this one?
Instagram user jdwag4 commented on this video that they, too, have this kind of set up in their backyard, “I have one as well and the squirrels love it, plus the chipmunks, the rabbits, and the doves! It is such fun watching them.”
And Instagram user cindygalbright shared something similar, what they wrote, “They are fascinating, funny to watch! My 89-year-old mother feeds the squirrels and birds; she uses different bird foods and now attracts all kinds of wrens, finches, woodpeckers, indigo buntings, etc. She gets so much enjoyment watching them!”
Do Squirrels Eat Corn?
If you watched this video and were thinking, okay, yes, that squirrel is eating that corn, but they will eat anything, but that doesn’t mean that it’s actually good for them. Is corn actually good for them?
The answer is not straightforward. In short, it can be. Squirrels will usually eat corn kernel germs, which are comprised of oils and various proteins.
If all they did was sit around all day eating such a nutrient-dense food, then they would become very unhealthy and overweight.
However, squirrels are very active creatures, and they often have trouble securing enough food to get them to winter, so if they can munch on some delicious corn and build up some internal fat stores, that could help them come wintertime.
Now, if the corn is moldy or canned, then it should never be given to them. The moldy corn is a source of mycotoxins, which are toxic to animals in general, and canned corn can be very salty, which is not good for them.
